Galen Smith, MD

Spine Surgery & General Orthopaedics

Dr. Galen Smith received his undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University and his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical School. He completed an Internship at the University of Louisville Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky before completing his Orthopaedic Residency at the Campbell Foundation at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. Dr. Smith continued his education by completing a Fellowship in Spine Surgery at Case Western Reserve University Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He is Board-Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and in Spine Surgery by the American Board of Spine Surgery. Dr. Smith is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves and has served proudly in deployments to Iraq in 2004, Landstuhl Germany Army Trauma Center in 2006 and Afghanistan in 2009. Dr. Smith is a Certified Impairment Rating Specialist acknowledged by the American Academy of Expert Medical Evaluators.

Patrick Riggins, MD

Sports Medicine, Joint Replacement & General Orthopaedics

Dr. Riggins received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida, Gainesville and his medical degree from the University of Miami. He completed a post-graduate Internship at Orlando Regional Medical Center as well as his Orthopaedic Residency. Upon completion of his Orthopaedic Residency, Dr. Riggins completed a Fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic in Orlando, Florida. He is Board-Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has been a featured presenter at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Southern Orthopaedic Association and the Florida Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Riggins is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. While Dr. Riggins has completed his Fellowship in Sports Medicine, he enjoys treating all phases of general orthopaedic surgery.

Bruce Miller, MD

Trauma, Joint Replacement & General Orthopaedics

Dr. Miller completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Irvine and his medical degree at the Chicago Medical School. He completed his Internship and Orthopaedic Residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. Dr. Miller is Board-Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. At his previous employer, Houston Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Associates, Dr. Miller served as the team physician for the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Houston Aeros. Dr. Miller’s interests are general orthopaedic surgery including trauma, joint replacement and sports-related injuries.

Gregory Jeansonne, MD

Trauma, Joint Replacement & General Orthopaedics

Dr. Jeansonne, also known as Dr. Greg to his patients, has completed two undergraduate degrees from Louisiana State University in Mechanical Engineering and Zoology. He completed his medical degree in 2001 from Louisiana State University, New Orleans. Dr. Jeansonne went on to complete a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Tulane University, New Orleans. He completed his Orthopaedic Residency at Tulane University, New Orleans. Due to Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Jeansonne completed the final year of his Orthopaedic Residency at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis. He is Board-Eligible member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Jeansonne is active in orthopaedic trauma research and developing new fracture care techniques. He enjoys all aspects of general orthopaedics with special interests in trauma and joint replacement. Fun Fact: While at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Dr. Jeansonne competed in the Pole Vault for the National Championship Track & Field team.

Jeffrey Marchessault, MD

Orthopaedic Hand Surgery

Dr. Marchessault is a board certified orthopedic surgeon.  He also has Certification of Additional Qualification in hand surgery after completing fellowship training in hand, wrist, elbow and microvascular surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Marchessault is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Association of Hand Surgeons.  He graduated Summa Cum Laude at the University of Massachusetts, majoring in Zoology and was admitted to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

Dr. Marchessault is a 28 year military veteran having served 3 years in the Army and 25 years in the Air Force.  He attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, the only military medical school, before serving as a Flight Surgeon in both the U.S. Special Operations and the 18th Fighter Wing.  He met his wife Michelle, during orthopedic residency training in Lubbock, Texas, where they married.  He later served tours in Iraq, then Afghanistan, as an orthopedic surgeon.  He now performs medical missionary work in Haiti every year as a member of an orthopaedic team on behalf of the CRUDEM foundation.

Dr. Marchessault is active in clinical research regarding osteoarthritis of the thumb.  He has developed a new x-ray view to assess thumb stability that will help guide surgical treatment recommendations.  He has also developed a technique to treat finger arthritis that avoids using silicone or plastic implants that can break.

Dr. Marchessault prides himself most of all on educating patients on what their problem is, what the non-surgical and surgical treatment options are, and a shared decision-making process between he and his patients.

Todd Horton, MD

Hand & Upper Extremities

Dr. Horton received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, San Diego in Cellular Biology and Biochemistry. He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine and completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego. Dr. Horton completed a Fellowship in Hand Upper Extremity Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and is Board-Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Horton has a very distinguished military background that includes rising to the level of Commander in the United States Navy, Medical Corps as well as time spent at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Naval Medical Center-Sand Diego, Naval Medical Center-Portsmouth, Tripler Army Medical Center-Hawaii and the Combined Joint Task Force/Horn of Africa Expeditionary Medical Force 13 – Camp Lemonier, Djibouti. Dr. Horton enjoys treating injuries of the hand and upper extremities.

Dr. Christopher Pendola

Neurology

Dr. Christopher Pendola received his undergraduate degree from Northeast Louisiana University and his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical School.  He completed his internship and neurology residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.  He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is an active member of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Dr. Pendola has been practicing neurology in Kingsport since 1996.  He has a multi-disciplinary practice where he diagnoses and treats a variety of neurological conditions including peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, multiple sclerosis, headaches, movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia), seizures, myopathies (muscle diseases), stroke, neuromuscular diseases (Lou Gehrig’s disease, myasthenia gravis, Guillain Barre syndrome), and dementia.  He is dedicated to provide the highest quality of neurological care and neurodiagnostic testing for his patients with compassion and a personalized approach.
